Runcie Tatnall
Biography
Originally from the Newark, Delaware area, Runcie Tatnall is a painter whose work
moves between portraits, boxing scenes, landscapes, interiors, found imagery, and
abstraction.
The subjects may change, but the paintings are connected by a fascination with tension,
atmosphere, and lingering questions. Tatnall is drawn to images that feel familiar yet
slightly unsettled—an ordinary scene, a figure, a gesture, or an abstract arrangement
that seems to hold more than it reveals. Americana often runs through the work, not as
a fixed subject, but as a mix of humor, strangeness, beauty, and unease.
Described as “keenly observant, expressive and raw,” Tatnall combines direct
observation with instinctive, economical gestures. Influences range from the immediacy
of the Ashcan School and the psychological stillness of Edward Hopper to the confident
brushwork of John Singer Sargent. Across both representational and abstract work, he
is interested in where description opens into suggestion, allowing a painting to imply a
larger before-and-after narrative without fully explaining it.
Tatnall studied painting and illustration at the University of Delaware and received his
MFA from the University of Miami. He lives and works in Savannah, Georgia, where he
teaches at SCAD.
